Cut is the arrangement of the facets of a diamond achieved from exact mathematical formulas. Formulas are used to achieve the beauty and reflection of a diamond known as its brilliance. Cut is one of four common factors used in diamond grading to determine the value of a diamond known as the 4 C’s of buying a diamond. The other factors are color, clarity and carat weight to which we have added a fifth factor called certification. Cut is extremely important in evaluating the quality of a diamond because a well-cut diamond will produce the ultimate in luster and beauty while a poorly cut diamond will actually lose light and appear dull. What this means is, regardless of the color, clarity, and number of carats, a well-cut diamond will always be beautiful and cut can affect the value of a diamond by 25% to over 50%. The term cut is often used to describe both the way a diamond is cut and the shape a diamond is cut, but do not confuse the two. The most well known shapes of diamonds include round brilliant, emerald, marquis, pear-shape, oval, square, heart, triangle, and princess cuts. The most popular shape is the round brilliant cut with other shapes being referred to as fancy shapes. Round brilliant diamonds actually retain less weight from the rough diamond than other shapes which makes round brilliant cuts more valuable than fancy-shaped diamonds. When choosing diamonds for your rings, necklaces, earrings or other diamond jewelry, ask your jeweler about cut and observe diamonds that are ideal cut, premium cut, and inferior cut before selecting the diamond cut you prefer.
